The PIC Multistate Map
Sixteen states require a nonresident pharmacy's pharmacist-in-charge to hold that state's own individual pharmacist license. California added its requirement July 1, 2026; Illinois January 1, 2026. This table shows the exam, fees, renewal cycle, and every gotcha for each — every cell links to the official source.

How to read this map
- Pharmacy has no interstate licensure compact; every state licenses separately via NABP eLTP (California runs its own process).
- NABP is mid-rollout replacing the MPJE with a Uniform MPJE (UMPJE); several states changed which exam they accept during 2026 — verify at application time.
- This map is administrative reference information, not legal advice. Boards decide; requirements change.
- NABP eLTP platform fees are on top of every state fee: $300 application + $100 per jurisdiction, non-refundable, and jurisdictions cannot be added to a submitted application — getting the state list right the first time matters. source
- “Before filing” vs “after filing” is the most expensive distinction on this page: in KY, LA, OR, VA, WV you must pass the exam before submitting eLTP; in TX, AL, MS, OK, TN, IL, MA you file first. Wrong order = wasted non-refundable fees.
- AK and AR run their own law exams (AR explicitly ignores the MPJE and requires an in-person paper exam). CA runs its own licensure process entirely (CPJE).
Getting licensed in more than one of these states?
The order you file, which exam satisfies each board this quarter, and which eLTP jurisdictions to list on that single non-editable application — we build that plan for $49: a personalized roadmap with every requirement source-linked and timestamped. Not exam prep — logistics.
